VALENTINE'S DAY IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES
A Celebration of Love and Friendship
Valentine’s Day in the Nordic countries is celebrated in a more subtle and personal way compared to many other parts of the world.
While not a traditional Scandinavian holiday, globalization and commercial influence have made it increasingly popular. The tradition emerged a few decades ago but only gained real traction in the 1990s. One reason for its growing appeal could be its timing—February is often a dull and dark month in Scandinavia, so a small celebration offers a welcome distraction from the winter blues.
Unlike many cultures that focus primarily on romantic love, Finland, known for its reserved nature, has a unique take on the holiday. In Finland, February 14th is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates to Friend's Day—or, more accurately, Friendship Day. This celebration is inclusive, with friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, and, of course, sweethearts exchanging cards, small gifts, flowers, and chocolates as tokens of appreciation.
Sweden also celebrates Valentine’s Day on February 14th, calling it Alla Hjärtans Dag—All Hearts’ Day. Similar to Finland, expressions of affection are not limited to romantic partners but extend to children, friends, and even teachers. It is truly a day to appreciate and cherish loved ones.
Denmark and Norway refer to the holiday as Valentinsdag, a direct translation of Valentine’s Day. In Norway, experiences take precedence over material gifts, with couples often opting for outdoor adventures in the beautiful Norwegian landscape. Denmark, on the other hand, has a charming tradition where admirers send gaekkebrev—playful anonymous love letters—to those they secretly admire. Couples may also exchange pressed white flowers known as snowdrops.
Iceland does not traditionally celebrate Valentine’s Day, though its popularity has grown in recent years. Instead, Icelanders observe two special days of love: Bóndadagur in January, honoring men, and Konudagur in February, celebrating women. This may be why Valentine’s Day remains a more understated occasion in Iceland, but couples still exchange small gifts, enjoy romantic dinners, or explore Icelandic nature together.
Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, here are some thoughtful gift ideas from HARMONY to show appreciation for your loved ones.
